eyeo gives parents time off during corona
4 tips for companies on how to support families
Cologne – 25 May 2020 Many parents are probably going through some hard times at the moment. Of course, they are not the only ones struggling but caring for children under these circumstances can bring parents to their limits. The full and cramped spaces, the home-office work, children’s heightened nerves at the reduced opportunities for seeing their friends. But what can companies and managers do to support their employees in these difficult times?
1.Recognize and appreciate
As a manager you should make clear that you see how difficult their situation is. Listen to them and ask them what they need right now. Parents, who are often circulating around other people’s needs 24/7 at the moment, will especially appreciate this. In order to maintain normal conditions in an exceptional situation, they are currently doing extraordinary things. Show appreciation for the complicated position they are in and share positive feedback generously. Recognize their efforts to deal with this difficult time.
2. Give additional free paid days
eyeo has decided to start corona family care. This means that all employees who are caring for children can reduce their working hours without getting their salary or vacation days reduced and without a need to get it approved. We think that people need their vacation days to regenerate/recover and people are very often dependant on their full salary and cannot cut their working hours spontaneously. Laura Dornheim, Head of Communications at eyeo says, “Parents should have the possibility to homeschool their kids, have meals as a family and spend time together. eyeo trusts its employees that they do their very best in this extreme situation.”
3. Change your meeting culture
Even with more flexible working hours, reduction of overtime and unpaid leave, the situation for parents can still be made somewhat more relaxed. It needs to be transparent who is available when and for how long so that meetings can be scheduled and people reachable for exchange and adhoc requests. Thus, parents should mark it in their company calendar when they are not available, and they should align with their team so responsibilities can be changed around when needed. Proactively offer to set up meetings so that they don’t clash with times that are important to children, such as lunch or good-night story time. Even better: Ask yourself how many meetings it really takes. This was true even before Corona, but has become even more relevant.
4. Be an imperfect role model
Don’t lock your own children out of your home office, it is helpful for everyone if executives act as a “normal” role model and that includes sharing your own reality. If you apologize because your daughter wants to sit on your lap just before the end of work, you are suggesting that it is a mistake or a problem. When your team sees that you are sometimes struggling with the situation, it takes a lot of pressure off all shoulders to deliver a perfect, childless performance in their home office.
eyeo wants to master this crisis with its employees, as a team. Besides corona family care we offer every employee to take two additional free paid days for community care, independent of the corona family care for employees who care for children. We also offer a broad variety of resources on mental health in the home office, games for children etc. Learn more about how we care for families and handle corona as a remote company on our press page.
