12 Easy Ways to Make Office Life More Earth Friendly
Another year and another Earth Day. Like Easter, New Year’s, etc… it’s always coming back. Though, it often does not have the same repercussion in our minds as some other designated days. Maybe it is the lack of presents, or party. Yet, Earth Day should be (and for many is) a symbol, a reminder of how we live in conjunction with the world around us. It is easy to get caught up in our daily lives and forget about the larger picture. One positive example, is that for a few months now young activists have been marching for climate change at #FridaysForFuture to focus global attention on the severe status of our Earth’s health.
At eyeo, our core mission as a company is to reduce the Internet’s advertising footprint. As humans though, we shouldn’t forget about reducing our own ecological footprint. We believe in doing our part daily as a company to promote a greener, healthier planet.
We have developed extensive internal guidelines and thought some of the action items might help you to make your own office life a little more Earth friendly:
Sharing: we order less and share more; we ask ourselves if we really need something in the first place.
Packaging: ordering/buying less also has the benefit of less packaging waste.
Recycling: when, however, there is packaging waste, we recycle or reuse.
REDUCING PAPER CONSUMPTION
Reusable: we use reusable plates and mugs, and have a general ethos of not relying on ‘one-use’ products wherever possible. It also adds to a more family-like atmosphere, where you use the dishes, and then clean them up.
Printing: print only when necessary. Use online subscriptions whenever possible.
REDUCING ELECTRICITY USAGE
Vigilance: we make sure to watch energy usage, and turn things off whenever they are not in use.
Heating/Cooling: we believe in putting on a sweater before turning up the heat, or opening a window before looking for the air-conditioner.
REDUCING FUEL CONSUMPTION
Bikes: we have a large, weather-protected space and freely-borrowable bikes there to help motivate our workers to travel on bikes.
Trains over Planes: trains in Germany use green energy, thus we prefer train transit in country.
Orders: we order in bulk to save on transportation.
REDUCING FOOD WASTE
Fridge: we have a fridge for leftovers, where anyone can eat what they find.
Take it: we provide fresh fruit at work, but employees are encouraged to take home any remaining fruit before the weekend.
Of course, not one of these things alone is the answer to climate change. But they are proactive steps. And the more people who proactively change their lifestyle choices with an eye toward the environment, the better our coming Earth Days on this planet will be.
