Meet the people who work at eyeo, but don’t necessarily work at eyeo. Take a sneak peek at their lives and what it means to be part of a company that allows you to work anywhere in the world. Today, meet Matthew, our resident Creative Copywriter.
Where in the world do you work?
In Düsseldorf, not too far from Cologne, but far enough to mostly do home office.
Tell us a little about your role at eyeo
I am a Creative Copywriter, which of course sounds a bit like “Mad Men” (my favorite show). I write a lot of things, but I also work with branding, marketing, content planning, social media, and whatever else people need from me.
What does your workday look like?
I wake up, make coffee and toast (if I’m super lucky, maybe there are croissants in the bread basket), plug my laptop into my second screen, and start with emails and team channels and Discourse, etc… When that’s done, I start my individual tasks, and later attend remote meetings.
What’s so great about working remotely?
You can be anywhere in the world. My family is in the US. My wife’s family is in Poland. I can work from those places, or from Germany. Or if it’s sunny, from my balcony.
Where is your favorite place to work?
At my desk in my bedroom. It’s also nice to be in the Cologne office for face-to-face conversations (great coffee there too, and the lunch crew if I feel like a family style lunch with my colleagues).
What do you do when you’re not working?
In my personal time, I read a lot and also write fiction. When I have extra money, I travel: my favourite places in the world are Vietnam, Japan, Morocco, Mexico… I also really enjoy learning new languages. I have a fancy set of knives with which I love to cook or grill when I have time.
On another note, I work at eyeo 30 hours a week, so I also work once a week at the University of Heinrich Heine teaching a Literature course. I like the contrast of Academia, even if its only a few hours a week.
You’re traveling for work and can only take a backpack. What do you pack?
Laptop, headphones, a good book (and of course a toothbrush).
What job would you be terrible at?
A lot of them, definitely. Though, I’m provenly bad at waiting tables, as I tried it during college.
What’s one gadget you can’t live without?
I’d like to think I could live alone in a log cabin like Jack Kerouac in Desolation Angels. The truth is, though, I really like my laptop.
What’s your favorite app?
Hmm, Maps Me is great if you are traveling somewhere where you might not have Wifi. Though, in my daily life, I probably use Spotfiy, and DAZN (for watching sports) the most.
Why did you join eyeo?
I wanted a new challenge at a cool company that had values I identify with. That both brought me to the company and made me want to stay. 😉 The people are also great.
